7 Abominations To The Lord

Proverbs 6:16-19 says there are six things the Lord hates but seven are an abomination to Him.

How can God hate six things but seven be an abomination to Him?

The answer is.

Because it's a riddle.

And because two of the seven abominations are actually caused by the same one thing.

This makes six things.

Here's the list can you tell which one thing causes two of the seven abominations.

1. A Proud Look.

2. A Lying Tongue.

3. Hands That Shed Innocent Blood.

4. Heart That Deviseth Wicked Imaginations.

5. Feet That Be Swift In Running To Mischief.

6. A False Witness That Speaketh Lies.

7. He That Soweth Discord Among Brethren.

Did you see it, or did you give up?

I don't know if you noticed or not but number two and number six are both liars except the liar in number six is lying as a witness to get someone else in serious trouble.

Proverbs 19:5 A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape.

Let's find the Biblical explanation of the seven abominations to the Lord but only through the eyes of King Solomon the writer of the riddle and most of the Proverbs.

He warns us not to believe the people who hate, or talk badly about other people when they're nice to us.

Most likely if you want to do good then it's only a matter of time before they'll turn on you or you'll pick up their bad habits.

Proverbs 26:24-25 He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him; When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart.

#1 A Proud Look

Proverbs 21:4 An high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin.

Who would've thought that simply making a face at someone in a certain way is a sin and something God truly hates?

How many people have you seen do this?

And how many proud looks do you get everyday?

Have you ever wondered why in the world are people thinking bad thoughts about me when they give you that proud look?

Sometimes they don't know you and they still look at you this way.

Other times you might think, did you do something wrong that you don't know about?

Or did they hear something bad about you?

You can get sick when people look at you this way, and you'll have to pray to fight off that spirit to feel better.

I try not to make proud looks at people because I know first hand, that something that simple can cause a person a lot of pain.

Some people don't care about how it makes you feel.

And some people do it to make you feel bad on purpose.

But God cares and this is the reason He hates it so much.

People love to judge you, and put you down to build themselves up.

But God is always considerate, loving and cares about the well-being and feelings of everyone.

#2 A Lying Tongue

Proverbs 19:22 The desire of a man is his kindness: and a poor man is better than a liar.

Why does God hate a lying tongue?

Two reasons.

One because He doesn't hate the person telling the lie only the lie being told.

And two because lies can cause just as much pain and suffering as anything else on this list.

This is not the occasional lie from fear of getting in trouble or the "sorry, I thought it was" lie.

This is the liar with the habit of lying all the time.

You can't trust a liar, they'll tell you whatever you want to hear to get what they want from you.

Waste your time and take advantage of your kindness.

They'll hide the important truth from you so they can get over on you for as long as possible.

And if you forgive them when you catch them, you'll have to do it again at your own expense.

And when they're done using you, or you can no longer give them what they want, they'll betray you and blame the experience on you with another lie.

This causes you pain that upsets the Lord because He cares about you.

And that's just one vague example.

#3 Hands That Shed Innocent Blood

Proverbs 1:19 So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.

God hates the beating or killing of an innocent person for obvious reasons.

This causes a tremendous amount of physical pain.

Now consider the suffering it creates to the person's family and especially the kids who might suffer the pain of growing up without a mother or father.

Without question God is deeply grieved by fighting, beating and killing.

And upset with the person who would take another man's life to take away what He has.

#4 Heart That Deviseth Wicked Imaginations

Proverbs 15:26 The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD: but the words of the pure are pleasant words.

What do you spend your time thinking about?

Do you find yourself thinking a lot of negative, whiny, complaining, lustful, ungrateful or prideful stuff?

God hates this because it goes against every generous, kind, gentle, considerate, loving and merciful thing He's ever done for you.

When you focus on negative, evil and wicked things you counteract what God is doing and sometimes help the devil make you and other people suffer.

If you're imagining wicked things all the time then eventually you'll say and do them too.

And instead of building faith in the word of God you'll build fear and allow the devil to set you up for a fall.

After using you to follow His evil plan He'll leave you dead or in jail.

That's why it's better to praise the Lord and consider the goodness of God to fight off all types of wicked, prideful and ungrateful thoughts.

#5 Feet That Be Swift In Running To Mischief

Proverbs 7:22 He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter or as a fool to the correction of the stocks;

Feet that are swift to run into mischief are people who practice mischievous activities and can't turn down the opportunity when it comes up again because they're so used to doing it.

The verse above is an example of a cheating woman that seduces a man.

In the verse he didn't try to resist her at all.

And will fall into the trap and pay a huge price for his actions.

God hates this because the person doesn't have enough faith in Him to stop and consider the pain they'll cause, but only the pleasure they'll gain, and neither do they consider the price they'll pay.

Therefore all three people involved will suffer damage at one point or another because of this.

#6 A False Witness That Speaketh Lies

Proverbs 14:5 A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.

A false witness will tell lies about other people and will also blame something they did on someone else to take the fall.

An evil person could lie to get you killed or put in jail under the right circumstances.

People who lie a lot could easily give false testimony in court.

Or team up with other false witnesses to make it seem more believable.

They'll do it because they want what you have and need to get you out of their way.

They want your spouse, your job position, your inheritance.

They'll even do it because they're jealous of your physical appearance.

Needless to say God does not approve.

#7 He That Soweth Discord Among Brethren

Proverbs 16:28 A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends.

An instigator, a person who causes two or more people to dislike or hate each other.

Maybe even to the point of someone getting seriously hurt or killed.

Proverbs uses the word talebearer a person who tells other people's secrets to cause trouble.

A gossiper or whisperer a person with a disobedient mouth or froward tongue.

A troublemaker who does it for their own entertainment.

They'll tell all your secrets and make people think bad things about you behind your back.

Someone might even approach you to tease or joke with you and you might feel like punching that person in the face.

All because someone you trusted decided to sow discord about you.

In conclusion the seven abominations to the Lord are looks, words, thoughts, attitudes and actions created by habit that cause other people grief that is very upsetting to the Lord.
